Day 2
7/8/18
My two
sweaters and double pajama pants were not enough as I kept on waking up in the
morning, struggling to keep myself warm in my sleeping bag. I thought it would
be much better as this was the first time I had slept on an air mattress while
camping. I realized how wrong I was as I found myself just wishing for it to be
time to wake up so I could finally warm up. When I finally hid myself in my
sleeping bag and I was somewhat warm, it was finally time to wake up, but I
still wanted to get out of there. We started off with a hike up a hill, with a
trail that was a little steep and full of dirt. By the time I finished dying
halfway up, I kept going and we finally made it up to the hill. It was pretty
worth it as I got to Mt Adams from a better view and it felt super peaceful,
especially with all the trees around us.
When it was finally time to go down, although
I forgot whose idea it was, but we started to run/slide/trip down the steep
dirt trail. I couldn’t stop laughing as I noticed everyone around me sliding
everywhere. Eventually, we made it back to camp without anybody getting hurt,
yet we were covered in dirt.
We later
went to Camp Chapparal, where Doug Olney, the Resource Manager for the Yakama
Forest Products. He took us on a walk towards the swimming hole and the meadow
we later camped out in. I thought it was pretty interesting when he talked
about Forestry, as his job is to work with others to manage forests. He talked
about how a virus named Dwarf Mistletoe made tree branches grow all weird in
different directions, which wasn’t good for the tree. Another part of his job
is moving trees when they are not growing well, due to it competing for
nutrients and water with the other trees that are super crowded up together. I
liked hearing about this because I understood it as I heard about animals
competing for natural resources in biology 110 class. I liked the new spot we
moved to as it had no mosquitoes and there was also a river nearby to skip
rocks and swim in.
